Speaker : Adnan Lee
38 year old Adnan Lee is the Managing Director of MBG Fruits – a fruit chain which outlet you can find at most major malls throughout Malaysia, today . An artist with experiences in landscaping for Damansara Uptown and a prop artist with The Mall prior to starting up MBG , Lee said fruits remind him of his first love, art – they are colourful and healthy.
It all began when Adnan Lee’s grandfather emigrated from China and became a fruit seller in Petaling Street in the 1950s. The business was handed over to Lee’s father, who started a fruit stall at a market in the 1990s in the Bukit Bintang area where Lot 10 is located today.
It was in 1994 that Lee officially took over. Back in the 90’s, Lee spent his day selling fruits on a mobile cart starting by collecting fruits from supplier at 5am and selling them at Jalan Imbi market at 7am, moving to streets around KL in the afternoon targeting the office crowd and then head on to “pasar malam” (night market) where he would finish selling the fruits at 10pm with a profit of about RM30 for the entire day.
Lee incorporated MBG in 2001 and then in 2005, he opened his first store in Avenue K, Jalan Ampang. He also made online purchases (minimum spend of RM 50 with a delivery surcharge of RM2) available in 2010, realizing the importance of social media and online services.
MBG Fruits currently has about 20 outlets in Malaysia and has recently gone international with its first outlet opened in Xiamen, China. MBG Fruits now has a HQ in Kota Damansara, with a total of 100 over employees under its payroll and plans of expanding locally and internationally are still on-going.
